Sound of the Waves
Yukio Mishima is the author of the novel The Voice of the Waves. This work is one of the first things that come to mind when it comes to sea-themed books.
According to the novel, Shinji Kubo, the protagonist of his story, lives with his diver's mother and younger brother Hiroshi. He and his mother support the family. Because Shinji's father, after the fishing boat he was on was attacked by an American bomber. He died in World War II. However, the family lives a somewhat peaceful life, and Shinji is quite happy to be a fisherman alongside his master Jukichi Oyama and another apprentice, Ryuji.
Things change when Terukichi Miteli decides to bring back his adopted daughter to pearl divers on another island after the death of his son. Beautiful Hatsue, who was bred as a pearl diver, wins many fans, including Shinji. The prospect of marrying Hatsue becomes even more attractive when Rich Mtia decides to adopt the man who married Hatsue as her son. Shinji and Hatsue soon fall in love.
When Lighthouse Guard and his wife's daughter Chiyoko returns after studying at a Tokyo university, she is disappointed to realize that Shinji, whom she loves, is in love with someone else.
A rape rumor spreads around. When Terukichi finds out about the rumor, he forbids Hatsue from seeing Shinji, but the two manage to keep communicating with each other through secret letters through Jukichi and Ryuji. Terukichi resolutely refuses to see Shinji for an explanation, and when he goes to see Shinji's mother Terukichi, who knows that his son will never intentionally lie, Terukichi's refusal to see him only increases the tension between Shinji and Hatsue. Before returning to Tokyo, Chiyoko regrets that Shinji replied implacably when asked that she was beautiful when asked if he thought Shinji was unattractive. He returns to Tokyo with guilt for ruining Shinji's chance of happiness.
Terukichi mysteriously runs Yasuo and Shinji on one of the transport ships. When the ship is caught in a storm, Shinji's courage and will allow him to endure the storm and save the ship. Terukichi's intention is revealed when Chiyoko's mother receives a letter from Chiyoko, who refuses to return home and feels she cannot return and see Shinji unhappy because she is the one who started the rumors. The lighthouse keeper's wife confronts Terukichi, who reveals that he is planning to adopt Shinji as Hatsue's husband. Running the boys on the ship was the most appropriate test for his daughter, and Shinji's act of saving the ship earned Terukichi's permission and respect for marrying his daughter. It is a very immersive work with this story called The Sound of Waves.
