Marine Painters: İbrahim Efendi
Born in the Koska district of Istanbul, İbrahim Efendi was born in 1853. He studied at the naval school. Later he was included in the Harbiye class. He became an officer, taking the rank of mufti. He started to work on the armored ship Orhaniye, which was connected to the Navy. The master, who is among the marine painters, made a name for himself by painting beautifully here.
Until the 1800s, miniature art came to the fore in Turkish society. Contemporary painting, which is among the plastic arts, has not developed. Painting, which does not show any significant progress, is the document of social life. Until the art of photography developed, social life was explained by drawing pictures. It was possible to show the culture and lifestyle that dominates society with painting. Names such as İsmail Hakkı Bey and Fahri Kaptan have also been pioneers in the development of painting in our country. İbrahim Efendi, who was among the painters of the navy, also contributed to the development of Turkish painting.
Bahriye trained contemporary painters. There was an intellectual understanding that was ahead of time in the naval environment. In the 19th century, modernization steps accelerated. Painting lessons started to be given to Mühendishane-i Bahri Hümayun. These courses, which were included in the curriculum in the name of modernization, played an important role in the development of the art of painting. Known pioneering works in the history of Turkish painting were given by military officers who were trained in this institution.
Among the first of the Turkish seafarer painting art were Captain-ı Derya Ahmet Vesim Pasha, Seyit Ali Efendi, and Fahri Efendi. Besides, İbrahim Efendi was included with names such as İsmail Hakkı Bey, Hüsnü Tengüz, Haydar Reis, Halit Naci, and Mehmet Ruhi Arel. İbrahim Efendi worked as a teacher at the Haddehane Şakirdan barracks. His talent was discovered as a result of the beautiful paintings he made.
It was thought that he would be efficient in sea factories with his paintings and he was given important duties for this purpose. He worked as a painter in the Marine Factories Painting House for many years. He has been promoted to the major rank. He continued to work for a while in this rank he reached. Later, he retired from the Navy. İbrahim Efendi has been an extremely important name who devoted his life to both seas and paintings. He continued to be remembered for his actions even after his death.
