Piper Alpha Disaster
It is an explosion caused by gas compression in Piper Alpha facilities located in the North Sea in 1988. The current platform lit up after the explosion. The flame spread in a very short time. When there was an explosion, the vast majority of employees were in their dormitory. It was difficult to reach the boots as the dense smoke covered up. For this reason, people threw high despite the warnings made to them. In the disaster, where 162 people died, only 62 survived.
Among the offshore fires, the most terrible is Piper Alpha. An investigation was launched under the Open Sea Facilities Regulation published in 1974, right after the fire. Lord Cullen was commissioned as head of the investigation. The research results were published in 1990 as the Cullen report. This event is also examined in a documentary called Night Fire. Questions such as if the necessary precautions were taken would not be a disaster.
